HIERARCHY

We are very proud to be one of the few disciplines, in traditional martial arts, that still exists. Our ranking structure is based on the historical structure of Okinawan Karate, little-seen today.

As opposed to contemporary ranking systems, our Dan (black belt) ranking structure is based on five degrees of proficiency. Our highest and most esteemed rank is Go Dan ( 5th degree ).

Our ranks are designated by white, brown, and black belts.

There are four grades (Kyu) of white belt: 8th thru 5th Kyu. The 8th Kyu is the lowest rank and 5th Kyu is the highest rank.

There are four grades (Kyu) of brown belt: The 4th thru 1st Kyu. The 4th Kyu is the lowest rank and 1st Kyu is the highest rank.

There are five degrees (Dan) of black belt: 1st thru 5th Dan. The 1st Dan is the lowest rank and 5th Dan is the highest rank.

Note: The Go Dan (5th degree) wears a red belt.

On average, an O.S.R.K.F. practitioner can take 9 to 12 years to reach his/her black belt. Our Federation takes the total development of it’s karatekas very seriously. We consider ourselves practitioners of a martial art, and not a sport.
